Arts at UHCW
Arts at UHCW supports patient recovery and wellbeing through the provision of a range of activities, including visual arts, music and bedside craft.
Our mission is to use ‘visual arts’ to support a patient’s journey from the front door, creating a welcoming and calming environment, We do this through bespoke commissions, the acquisition of a permanent artwork collection, and an extensive changing gallery space for our local community.
We also effectively use arts and music to support and encourage patients of all ages to engage in creative activities whilst in hospital, in an effort to help raise their confidence promote wellbeing and reduce any feelings of isolation.
Art at UHCW
At UHCW We have over 100 metres of wall space dedicated to exhibiting art created by the local community, with new and established local artists, schools, community groups and creative organisations taking part. We even exhibit patient and staff artwork. The gallery spaces are located in the busiest areas of the hospital, and are changed regularly to refresh the clinical environment. In 2019 we exhibited over 200 pieces of art created by 60 local artists.
“I’ve always loved how the hospital corridors are used as exhibition spaces. Over the years whether it be me waddling around in labour or pacing whilst a family member is in surgery, I’ve always made a beeline for the pictures to bring some serenity to my thoughts. Great scheme.” – Visitor
Department Enhancements
Arts at UHCW also offers support and advice to wards and departments wishing to enhance patient areas. This can range from selecting suitable colourways, sourcing artwork or simply offering creative activities tailored to patient need.
Creative Prescriptions
Arts and participation in arts activities is well evidenced as improving care and outcomes especially for people with communications and cognitive impairments and dementia.
Arts works in partnership with local artists and musicians to bring creativity to the bedside, through participatory workshops and music concerts.
Whilst unable to deliver our usual interactive programme at the moment check out the below resources to help while away those long days in hospital.
