A dedicated member of staff at University Hospital decided to turn a shock diagnosis into an opportunity to make a difference to others

Mandi Kirkman, Clinical Nurse Specialist on the Early Pregnancy Unit, was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer after a routine screening. Faced with the prospect of losing her hair, Mandi decided to do a sponsored head shave to raise funds for UHCW Charity in support of the Oncology Breast Care Unit.

Mandi, who has worked for the Trust for nearly 35 years, said “I want to turn this awful situation into a positive that will not only help me, but others in my situation. This is my way of giving back”

Not only did Mandi brave the shave, her colleague and friend Aimee Bates decided to join her to show her support and to help raise even more funds.

Mandi and Aimee have so far raised an amazing £4815.09 and were delighted to hand it over to Leanne Jones, Arden Centre Manager.

Rachael Ryan, Community & Events Fundraiser said “Mandi is an inspiration. Despite facing a difficult time, she has used it as an opportunity to make things better for her colleagues and fellow patients. We are so grateful to Mandi and Aimee for their amazing support”

Mandi and Aimee’s fundraising is still in full swing and they are well on their way to reaching over £5000! You can support them here
