World Prematurity Day 2021

17 November, 2021

What is World Prematurity Day?

World Prematurity Day is a global movement to raise awareness of premature birth and the impact it can have on the baby and their families

On the 17th November, staff from across University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, their premature babies and their families, past and present, come together with neonatal units nationally and internationally to celebrate the 15 million babies born early every year around the world. 60 000 of these babies are born prematurely in the UK

Over 100 countries will join forces to raise awareness

Our neonatal unit at UHCW NHS Trust

  • 650 babies are born prematurely (below 37 weeks) at UHCW NHS Trust each year
  • 450 of these premature babies will be admitted to the Neonatal Unit
  • And approximately 200 preterm infants of 34 to 37 weeks will also be cared for in our Transitional Care Unit and Post Natal Ward
  • Additionally 180 full term babies will be admitted to the Neonatal Unit
  • Our Neonatal Unit is the regional centre for key specialisms including the pioneering treatment of babies deprived of oxygen during birth using the controlled cooling technique
